Practical playbook
A practical oil & gas well data review playbook.
A practical sequence for reviewing LOS, well economics and budgets, then agreeing on the next step.
1. Establish the analysis scope
Confirm the period, properties, source records, and measures in the view. Record anything incomplete before reviewing movements.
2. Start with the financial movement
Identify changes in revenue, operating expense, capital spend or cash flow. Focus on movements that require an explanation.
3. Find the well or category behind it
Narrow the comparison to the fields, wells, accounts, or work contributing to the movement. Keep the portfolio context available.
4. Bring the plan into view
Compare relevant budgets and AFEs with actual activity. Investigate scope and timing before concluding why a variance occurred.
5. Validate the supporting records
Follow the summary into the detail. Separate known facts, reasonable explanations, and questions that still need evidence.
6. Close with a reviewable next step
Agree on the question to resolve, the owner, and the next review date. Save the analysis view so the next conversation is comparable.
Take it into the meeting
Leave with a review record the team can use.
Use one record for each material movement. Keep the observation, supporting evidence and unresolved question separate, then agree on the owner and next review.
| Review item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Scope | analysis period, properties and wells included in the comparison. |
| Signal | The measure that changed and the comparison used. |
| Evidence | The report, well, account or work record supporting the observation. |
| Open question | What the available record does not yet explain. |
| Owner | The person responsible for validating the explanation. |
| Next step | The evidence to obtain and the next review date. |
Put the playbook to work
Use one question to test the connected workflow.
Choose the comparison, follow the affected well or category, bring the relevant budget into view, and retain the records needed for the next conversation.
Start the conversation
Bring your well data question. See the connected workflow.
Start with the analysis question your team needs to answer. We will show the relevant Upstream+ workflow.
