Summary to detail: what a trustworthy drill down should preserve

A drill down should preserve property scope, dates, basis and measure definitions so the detail explains the number that prompted the investigation.

Summary to detail: what a trustworthy drill down should preserve

A trustworthy drill down carries the summary’s scope into the detail. The property population, dates, reporting basis and measure definition should remain clear so the next screen explains the number that prompted the investigation.

Moving to more rows is not enough. If the detail quietly changes the date range or includes a different set of properties, the reviewer is investigating a different question.

Keep the comparison visible

Record the summary measure and its scope before following the detail. Confirm whether the next view uses the same period, ownership basis, filters and reporting level.

When a view intentionally changes scope, name the change. A useful navigation path can move from a portfolio to one property, but the reviewer should know which subset is now displayed.

Reconcile the explanation

The relevant detail should explain the selected total under the same accepted definition. Differences can arise from grouping, excluded rows, rounding or source timing. Identify them rather than assuming the next screen must be wrong.

In a fictional review, a $15,000 category movement becomes two property movements of $9,000 and $6,000. The next question is which accounts or work records explain those amounts. If the property totals do not reconcile, investigate the scope before interpreting the activity.

Distinguish record detail from causation

An account or invoice can establish what was recorded. It may not establish why the work was required or whether it achieved the intended result. The operating explanation can require additional field context.

Keep evidence types distinct: financial record, production observation, work description and reviewer interpretation. That distinction makes unresolved questions easier to assign.

Test the complete path

During evaluation or training, follow one material question from summary through the relevant views and back. Ask another reviewer to reproduce the same scope.

Upstream+ connected well data is intended to shorten that path. Evaluate it against the actual question your team needs to answer, including the definitions and source records required for acceptance.

The best detail view does not simply show more information. It explains the selected number without losing the question.
